We care about the quality of your stay with us. Below are nearby attractions, shopping and restaurants that are popular with our guests. Listed locations are nearby with approximate distance listed where available.

Most Popular Area Attractions

Buffalo Trails Museum

Located in Epping, northeast of WillistonNorth Dakota, the Buffalo Trails Museum consists of eight historic buildings including a homesteader’s log cabin, a country school, and even a dentist’s office (the tools used were a little different back then…).

The area is open for tours in the summer months; call ahead for details. You can get to Epping by following U.S. 2/85 north out of Williston, then turning east on County Road 6 to town.

Eagle Ridge Golf Club

Embark on your next trip through North Dakota and bring your clubs – you'll want to play some excellent golf in Williston. Head to the northwestern section of the state and book a tee time for the Eagle Ridge Golf Club, one of the premier places to tee off in Williston.

As you play through the lush, 18-hole course, enjoy the scenic views of wide open pastures. There are very few trees at the Eagle Ridge Golf Club, making it a more expansive-looking course, and, to some degrees, easier. But be aware of the 12th – it's a treacherous dogleg right, par-4, and ranks as the second hardest hole on the course.

Fort Buford State Historic Site

At the junction of the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers lies the site of Fort Buford, which went up in 1866 in northwestern North Dakota. It is most notable as the surrender site for Sitting Bull in 1881.

You can still see original items such as a stone powder magazine, cemetery site, and a former officers’ quarters which now serves as an on-site museum. To get to Fort Buford, follow ND Highway 1804 about 23 miles south and west from Williston. The Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center is located one half-mile to the west.

Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site

ND Attractions

Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site

A major post along the Missouri River – and a rather peaceful one at that – Fort Union operated from 1828 to 1867 as the principal trading post of the American Fur Company.

Seven Native American tribes and European settlers converged here to trade everything from buffalo robes (over 25,000 annually) to blankets and beads.

Fort Union was literally dismantled shortly after the Civil War, by the U.S. Army constructing nearby Fort Buford, by steamboat crews passing by on the Missouri River needing the wood for their steam engines, and just by time.

Today it’s been rebuilt to its original appearance from its 1850s heyday near WillistonNorth Dakota. Original items like arrowheads unearthed by archeologists are on display.

Frontier Museum

A complex set up as an original frontier town – from the church and schoolhouse to a house and train depot – the Frontier Museum is located in WillistonNorth Dakota.

Plenty of early and mid-20th century items are on display in the buildings. The Williston Frontier Museum is open Memorial Day to Labor Day – and group tours are available.

James Memorial Art Center

There are many ways to explore and experience the deep and lustrous history of North Dakota. On your next visit to Williston, be sure to see and tour the James Memorial Art Center, one of the premier historical destinations in the state. You can find the JMAC off of 6th Street and 1st Avenue in downtown Williston.

Opened in 1911, the James Memorial Art Center celebrates local culture and heritage with a number of unique art displays. Throughout the year, you can see permanent and temporary art installations at the JMAC. Each year, during the third weekend in September, the JMAC produces the Art Festival in Recreation Park.

Lewis & Clark State Park

Located along the Missouri River, about 20 miles east of Williston along Highway 1804 (named for one of the years of Lewis & Clark’s exploration trips), you’ll find this 490-acre park.

There are plenty of opportunities for fishing, swimming, hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing – and knowing North Dakota weather, this could possibly all happen in a single day.

In case you think North Dakota has no open water, the Missouri River has widened to become Lake Sakakawea at this point and there’s a marina; in case you think North Dakota has no beaches, a sandy beach and great swimming await; in case you think you’re far from technology, the park has wireless Internet.

Lewis & Clark Trail Museum

ND Attractions

Lewis & Clark

Housed in an original school from 1914, the Lewis & Clark Trail Museum hosts a series of homestead artifacts from early life in North Dakota, from the Lewis & Clark days to early 20th century.

Other historic buildings are on the grounds. Alexander is located along U.S. 85, about 27 miles south of Williston.

It’s also just north of the North Entrance to Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

Links of North Dakota

Rated by Golfweek and Golf Digest as the no. 1 course in North Dakota – and among the top 100 rated public courses in America – the Links of North Dakota lie in heart of the Bakken Formation.

Just 28 miles outside of Williston, the course has no water hazards, but you’ll battle 82 sand traps and rough prairie grass along the links, portions of which sit upon bluffs overlooking Lake Sakakawea.

Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center

Located 22 miles southwest of Williston, North Dakota and one-half mile east of Fort Buford State Historic Site, the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center tells the story of the confluence of these two rivers.

The center also reveals the same view Lewis & Clark enjoyed when they visited in 1805 and 1806. Inside the rotunda, you'll find murals, paintings of the landscape, and more. Hours vary based on time of year.

Old Armory

Plan your next excursion through North Dakota and plan to experience all you can when you stay in Williston. Among the long list of destinations you'll want to visit in Williston, one sticks out among the pack: the Old Armory. The Old Armory in downtown Williston was built in 1915, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Today, the Old Armory is a lively and popular convention center, hosting a number of events, expos, and festivals throughout the year.

Outhouse on a Pole

A quirky roadside attraction, if you’re driving along Highways 23 or 1804 in New Town, North Dakota (about an hour east-southeast of Williston), look for the “Outhouse on a Pole.”

Found at the corner of Main St. and West Ave., the Outhouse on a Pole is complete with someone sitting down – and a vulture above. It was designed to draw attention to a port-a-potty business, and it does.

Three Affiliated Tribes Museum

When Lake Sakakawea was forming due to construction of the Garrison Dam on the Missouri River, two towns were about to get submerged by the new lake: Van Hook and Sanish. Consequently, they had to move, and they decided to combine and form a new town.

So, New Town, North Dakota was created in the early 1950s near Williston. The Fort Berthold Reservation was also located in an area where the lake would take over, and today the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara tribes share affiliations.

The Three Tribes Museum showcases this history, along with artifacts, displays, pictures, and more. The museum is open mid-April through early November and occasionally host traveling exhibits.
