Soaring 2,063 feet above the surrounding North Dakota terrain, the KVLY-TV tower – formerly the KTHI-TV Tower – went up in 1963. It was the first structure ever built beyond 2,000 feet, and was the tallest manmade structure from 1963 to 1974, and then again from 1991 until 2010.
It remains the tallest structure in the Western Hemisphere and third tallest structure in the world, after the Burj Khalifa and the Toyko Skytree in Japan. From Fargo, it’s about a 45-minute drive north on I-29 and west on Highway 200; the tower itself is in Blanchard about halfway between Fargo and Grand Forks.
